How to Capture TikTok

Steps to Capture TikTok Profiles

  1. To capture a Tiktok profile, access the Page Vault Browser, type/paste the profile URL into the browser address bar and press enter on your keyboard.
  2. Once the page loads, it’s important to log into TikTok to access all available content. We suggest using an examiner account to prevent your personal information from appearing in the capture. See our help page on creating examiner accounts for more details.
  3. Once you are logged in, click “Expand.”
  4. Here you will be able to customize your settings to capture the content you want:
    1. Scroll to the bottom to reveal full grid – this is a required selection, this directs the system to load the full profile grid so all content is visible and accessible
    2. Get post URLs and email to – Sends a CSV file containing URLs for each post on the profile
    3. Capture grid after expanding – Captures the entirety of the profile grid
    4. Expand and capture each post on grid – Will open each post and expand comments to capture all content
    5. Skip Expand and capture each post on grid – This will prevent the system from opening and capturing each post on the profile, this is useful if you do not need to capture the comments.
    6. Capture videos in grid – Captures the videos included in the TikTok profile, delivered in a folder as individual videos in your Portal. These are playable outputs that can be downloaded to your device
    7. Capture a list of posts (URLs) – Allows you to batch capture a list of TikTok posts
  5. Once you have the Expand settings selected, select the folder where you would like to save the capture. You can also change the default capture name, input a case matter ID, and add notes. Then click “Expand and Capture.”

Steps to Capture Individual TikTok Posts

  1. Access the Page Vault Browser and type/paste the post URL into the browser address bar and press enter on your keyboard.
  2. Once the page loads, ensure you are logged in to access all comments and content
  3. Once you are logged in, click “Expand.”
  4. Here you will be able to customize your capture settings:
    1. Format post and expand comments (open in new browser tab) – Opens the post in a new tab to format it in a way that will fit on a PDF and expands all comments
    2. Format post (opens in new browser tab)- Opens the post in a new tab to format it in a way that will fit on a PDF but will not expand comments
    3. Capture a list of posts (URLs)– Allows you to batch capture a list of TikTok posts
    4. Capture after expanding and save to folder – Selecting this will ensure the post is captured and stored in your selected folder
  5. Next, you’ll see the “Pixel Limit.” The pixel limit stops the expansion process after a certain number of pixels load to prevent any extremely large profile from crashing the browser. We find that the browser functions best when limiting the expansion to 250,000 pixels at a time.
  6. Once you have the Expand settings selected, select the folder where you would like to save the capture. You can also change the default capture name, input a case matter ID, and add notes. Then click “Expand and Capture.”

TikTok FAQs

How do I capture just the video for a TikTok?

TikTok videos can be captured using our Batch tool – for more information on using Batch to capture videos, please review our help article here!

Why is the expander not capturing all comments on a video?

Unfortunately, TikTok posts with a substantial number of comments encounter limitations when being captured in full. This challenge originates from TikTok itself, rather than our Expander tool, as the platform imposes restrictions on loading all comments comprehensively. TikToks featuring comments ranging from 100 to 400 can be captured comfortably. However, we cannot guarantee capture beyond this threshold, and posts exceeding 400 comments are unlikely to load due to TikTok’s platform structure.

How do I capture TikTok Slides posts?

Please note that TikTok does not classify those posts as videos, but instead as audio with pictures. We currently have 2 different methods for capturing these post types:

Using Video Download Helper:

  1. To extract URLs for the audio, you’ll need to install the free Chrome extension called Video Download Helper. First, ensure the video is playing, then click on the Video Download Helper icon in your extensions section. A dropdown menu will appear, giving you the option to extract the video URL.
  2. After opening the dropdown, find an option that allows you to copy the URL, and enter that URL in the videos section of Batch along with cookies which you can get from the Page Vault browser, or using Copy Cookie. Click here for a video reference. This will produce only an audio file of the TikTok post.
  3. To capture all images in the TikTok post, you have to take single-screen captures. To do so, pause the TikTok and select Single-screen in your Capture type or use the Ctrl+U keyboard shortcut. A screenshot will then be taken of your exact screen. Scroll through each image and take screenshots of each.
  4. After capturing all the images, you can choose to merge them into one PDF when exporting your folder.

Using SanpTik:

  1. Navigate to https://snaptik.app/en1
  2. Paste the URL into the designated box and click “Download”
  3. Once the page loads, click on the “Render Video” button
  4. Once the video renders, right-click on the “Download Video” option and select “Copy link URL”
  5. You can then put this URL into our Batch video tool to capture!

When capturing comments, the expander gets stuck trying to open replies!

Our team has noticed an issue in the TikTok platform where we are unable to expand replies at all (also occurring outside of Page Vault). At the moment, our best solution is to manually try to expand the comments (this may not work for replies due to an issue on TikTok’s end) and do entire page or single screen captures utilizing the Capture option to get the needed content.

I’m trying to log into TikTok but it says “Maximum Log In Attempts Reached.”

If this occurs when trying to log into TikTok with a username/email and password, you will need to use an alternate login method. TikTok will have an option on the login page to “Log in with QR Code.” you can use your mobile device or tablet to scan that code and log in on the device, this will then log you in inside of Page Vault.
